Then I printed two pics of the boys as 9x20 inch (25x50cm) photos and framed them in the skinny frames. The bigger ones are 20x20 inches (50x50cm) and I made them up by creating a grid collage in Photoshop and dropping in pictures I'd taken of their artwork.
Here are the shots of the boys:
Noah calls this "the cutest one"

And here is their artwork:

And here is how it looks on the wall. Daniel's bed will go back above Noah's as bunk beds and when we extend the wardrobe the white chest of drawers will go in the corner.

Update: Now available in my Etsy store - click here for the listing.
I really like that! Great way to showcase their art without having to frame, mat and hang each piece individually. Thanks for the idea!

ReplyDeleteOMG Jen--another amazing job! This looks so incredible--I love it!!
ReplyDeleteJen these are so cool! I love them. So where would one who is NOT a photographer print a 20z20 print?
ReplyDeleteThanks, everyone!
ReplyDeleteI put the long skinny portraits at the bottom of the collages and had them printed as 20x30 inch prints at my local online lab (I'm in England, so a link won't help you) and then cut them apart when they arrived.
Wow...those are great. I love all of the colors here, and how you put them up in HIS room, so he can always see his artwork and his beautiful face!
ReplyDeleteThat is adorable! I LOVE it. I have photoshop- too bad I have no clue how to use it.

What a great idea!!! I love seeing the kid's artwork showcased. My boys are 14 and almost 10, they still love to look at some of their older stuff that is framed and on the wall.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures of your boys.

ReplyDeleteJen, what you've done is absolutely beautiful! Outside of the prints, do you save all of their actual craft projects? And how are saving these large prints when you change them out? thx - found your blog through the crafty crow.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the kind words!
ReplyDeleteHoneybee, I don't actually save a lot of their artwork. I do have piles stashed around that I need to go through - very NOT organised!
I've only switched out a large framed print once and just threw out the old one. I have the digital file still, and that's enough for me.
Beautiful photographs, and I LOVE the art idea, too!!
ReplyDeletewow! GREAT idea! I have a bunch of artwork from my daughter's preschool last year, I think I might do this with it all
ReplyDeleteThose artwork collages are totally cool! Found your blog today through Complete Organizing Solutions...can't wait to dig into the archives!!

This is wonderful, and a great keepsake for the boys to take with them when they move out. The work would look great with any decor. For the boys photos/frames, did you place the photos on the side, and the remainder is empty? With 7 children you can imagine the artwork that has piled up around here. THanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI photographed the boys against a white (high key) background and just cropped the photo with extra background before printing.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous idea ; I came by via Kate form Picklebums.
ReplyDeletesuch a great idea! Thanks for sharing!

ReplyDeleteThank you so much :)
ReplyDeletethank you will store this for when my first grandchild starts producing art work
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great idea...it looks great and your boys must love to see their work this way. I love your collage arrangement and the photos of the boys framed with white space...so creative. I love stuff that works out even better when you use stuff you already have, like the ikea frames.
ReplyDeleteSUCH a great idea! I'm a novice when it comes to Photoshop - is the grid collage template standard?
ReplyDeleteI made the grid collage in Photoshop - it is available as a service through my Etsy store; link in the post above.
ReplyDeleteI'm a grandma, but I think this is perfect!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, thanks for great idea
ReplyDeleteI have wanted to do this and make a book but I love this idea, what way did you find to be the best way to photograph the artwork?
ReplyDeleteI put the artwork on a chair or the floor in front of a window or sliding glass door, hover over it, making sure the camera is horizontally over the picture or artwork and take a picture that way.
DeleteFound you via Pinterest. I just want to say this is exactly what I have always wanted to do! Thank you for showing me how!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, everyone!
ReplyDeleteFANTASTIC!
